The Polish telecommunications market has been gradually liberalised since the 90s. Long gone are the days of the outdated communication system inherited from the communist era finalising its modernization in 2005.

The incumbent supplier in Poland is TPSA (Telekomunikacja Polska S.A.), old monopoly of the sector and that now has been mainly privatised with France Telecom holding 47.5% of the market. Since the beginning of open competition TPSA’s market share that refers to Internet access has been seriously reduced, although its domination is still felt.

The Polish office of electronic communications recently demanded that TPSA rent out 51% of its ADSL lines to other ISPs at prices 60% less than the then current price. According to the Eurostat and the OCDE these prices are the most expensive in Europe. As a consequence, the rest of the operators prefer to supply leased lines via Wireless, because they offer more reliability with respect to ADSL that has less quality in comparison to Eastern Europe.
